Rooted on the word “pigment,” it refers to the darkening or discoloration of the skin due to excess pigment, usually caused by sun exposure, irritation or scarring, and even hormonal changes.

But while our body’s natural repair processes can fade away some discoloration over time, not all signs of hyperpigmentation resolve on their own. As we get older, they become tougher and trickier to treat, too, as mature skin takes longer to heal and regenerate.
