Yes, You Need A Scalp Scrub—Here’s Why
Say goodbye to grease and hello to healthier (possibly fuller) hair!
When it comes to hair care, most of us are all about the essentials: shampoo, conditioner, and maybe a hair mask. But apparently, there’s another key product that we should be adding to our shower arsenal—and using at least once a week: the scalp scrub. (Also read: Healthy Hair Secret: You Need To Exfoliate Your Scalp)
In case you’ve forgotten, your scalp is made up of skin, too, so it only makes sense that it needs exfoliation. But how exactly do you use a scalp scrub and what benefits can you get? (Spoiler alert: lots.) Read on.
How a scalp scrub works
Just like face and body scrubs that you use on your skin, a scalp scrub is exactly what it sounds like: exfoliators for your scalp. While shampoos can be powerful cleansers, sometimes using them alone just won’t cut it. This is especially true if you’re prone to oil and sweat or are always exposed to environmental pollutants.
Unlike your shampoo, a scalp scrub is designed specifically to gently exfoliate dead skin cells, remove excess oil, and break down any residue—including leftover products—on the surface of your scalp. Plus, it’s helpful for those who are susceptible to skin buildup, irritation, and flaking: think dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis.
Benefits of using a scalp scrub:
- It purifies your scalp. It targets the buildup of oil, dirt, styling products, and other impurities on your scalp and hair, and sloughs off dead skin cells to reveal fresher, newer skin.
- It boosts healthy hair growth. Residue can inevitably gather at the root of hair, blocking your hair follicles and hindering proper growth. (It can also cause hair fall!) By regularly exfoliating, you’re giving your strands a healthy environment to grow and flourish. The massaging action that comes with exfoliation also stimulates circulation, promoting hair growth.
- It can make your hair shinier. When your scalp is clear of flakes and grime, hair is free to grow shinier and stronger. An unhealthy scalp, meanwhile, is a breeding ground for dull, dry, and brittle strands.
- It prevents dryness and dandruff. While a good scalp scrub addresses excess oil, it doesn’t degrease skin completely; it allows a healthy amount of natural oil to nourish your scalp in order to prevent scalp dryness and flaking, as well as symptoms of eczema and psoriasis.
What scalp scrub should I use?
Ready to give your scalp (and strands!) a boost? Here’s a derma-recommended product from global hair authority Bosley:
What it is: A gentle scalp exfoliating treatment, this formula is designed to detoxify, rejuvenate, and invigorate the scalp.
Key ingredients and benefits:
- Activated Bamboo Charcoal helps absorb excess oil and debris from the scalp’s surface by drawing out the grease and impurities
- Naturally-dissolving sugar particles deliver gentle physical exfoliation to slough away dead skin cells and build up
- Caffeine blocks and inhibits the effects of DHT, an androgen known for interfering with the hair growth cycle, causing hair loss
- Rosemary Extracts have antioxidant properties to help reduce scalp inflammation and increase circulation
How to use: Wet hair and separate into sections using your fingertips to expose the scalp. Apply the scrub into fingertips and massage unto the parted sections on the top, back, and sides of the head. Add water and work up lather. For best results, follow with the Bosley MD Conditioner. Use shampoo to remove and rinse well with water. Use weekly to maintain a healthy scalp.
Proven Results
In a limited trial, 80% of those who tried the Bosley Rejuvenating Scalp Scrub reported improved scalp condition after just two weeks, while 100% said their scalp felt cleaner and healthier after just three uses.
