Healthy Hair Secret: You Need To Exfoliate Your Scalp
The good news? There’s a Biologique Recherche P50 formula for that.
In our quest for healthier, thicker, and shinier locks, we’re quick to turn to shampoos, conditioners, and all those fancy hair treatments. But while these work in caring for your strands, they don’t always get to the bottom of the issue—and by this, we mean the scalp, a.k.a. the skin covering the top of your head.
If you don’t have issues with dandruff or greasiness, you probably think you don’t need a scalp treatment. But here’s the thing: While your body knows how to naturally renew itself through the process of exfoliation (or the shedding of dead skin cells to make way for new ones), it can use some help.
And this is when scalp exfoliation comes in handy. Dr. Maximin Navarro, Fellow of the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) and co-founder of Bella Pelle Philippines, explains the need for this step. “It reconditions the scalp, regulates sebum, and purifies the scalp, [removing the buildup of] oil, dirt, and dead skin cells.” He adds, “The massaging action of exfoliation stimulates blood flow to the scalp and increases the stream of nutrients to the hair follicles.” The result? Thicker, healthier tresses and better hair growth.
Exfoliation 101
There are many ways to exfoliate your scalp, and these include the use of physical exfoliants like scrubs, gloves, or brushes, as well as chemical exfoliants that act as solvents to dissolve oil and dirt. But just as different skin types require different products, different scalps have different needs. Those who are prone to dryness or dandruff may benefit from physical scrubs or clarifying treatments with salicylic acid, while oil-prone skin may need stronger acids to address sebum buildup.
Dr. Navarro advises not to exfoliate your scalp with these treatments more than once or twice a week, though. “Exfoliation removes oil from the scalp, and more frequent exfoliation may cause the scalp to become hyperactive and over-produce oil,” he explains. “If you have dry scalp, exfoliate once every month or once every two weeks at most.”
P50 For Healthier Scalp + Hair
If you’re familiar with Biologique Recherche’s cult-favorite P50 range, you’ll be glad to know that the brand also carries a scalp treatment that’s great for dry and oily types alike, as well as those in between. The Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 Capillaire contains the core P50 formula that rebalances the skin—more specifically, the scalp—and gently exfoliates with a delicate mix of AHAs, BHAs, and purifying agents.
What it does: This specific P50 variant helps reduce irritation and scales and controls sebum, leaving your scalp cleansed and rebalanced, explains Dr. Navarro. Plus, it also helps strengthen the hair, restore its vitality, and increase fiber resistance—so you can enjoy thicker, shinier, and more manageable strands. (Did we mention it’s a multitasker?)
For those who are new to the P50 line, the Lotions P50 gently renew skin over 50 days (P stands for peeling, while 50 stands for 50 days), which represent around two epidermal cycles. That said, exfoliation is super gentle that it can be done daily, says Dr. Navarro.
To use the Lotion P50 Capillaire, apply a few drops evenly over the scalp and gently massage with your fingertips. Leave on for five to 10 minutes then proceed to wash with shampoo and conditioner if desired. It’s recommended for all hair and scalp types, and is particularly helpful for those with dandruff or styling product buildup.
