Should You Try Mesotherapy? Here’s How It Can Help Your Skin—Fast

These microinjections can treat a wide range of beauty concerns.

When it comes to skin care, patience is a virtue. We’re taught to religiously apply our creams and serums every day and then wait for the effects to manifest over time—after a few weeks or months. But if you’re the type who wants results yesterday, you may want to go for more advanced skin care methods instead of just relying on your topical products. One option that delivers quick results minus any surgery? Mesotherapy.

What is mesotherapy?

A technique originally developed in the 1950s to relieve pain, mesotherapy has since evolved to cater to a wide range of skin and beauty concerns. “Mesotherapy is a non-surgical technique that involves the use of micro injections on the superficial layer of the skin, specifically the mesoderm (or the middle layer),” explains Dr. Maximin Navarro, resident dermatologist at Bella Pelle Skin Solutions and a Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) fellow. These series of injections contain a cocktail of active ingredients, vitamins, and nutrients to target underlying skin issues and therefore improve the complexion.

Sounds painful? Not really. While needles are involved, this treatment is considered less invasive than Botox and fillers—because of the tiny size of the needles— and usually requires no downtime. This means you can immediately resume regular activities after a session.

How can it help?

According to Dr. Navarro, he uses this technique in the treatment of different clinical dermatological conditions. It’s not limited to the face, too; it can be used on the body and even on the scalp. Here’s a quick look at some of the aesthetic issues that can be addressed by this microneedling strategy:

  • Acne. Unlike common topical acne treatments, mesotherapy allows acne-fighting ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin for better and faster results. Benefits include soothing of inflamed skin, reduction of oil, as well as enhanced exfoliation and skin healing.

Try: Mesobotox for acne, starts at P7,500, which involves the injection of small quantities of diluted Botulinum toxin using special meso needles. Benefits include reduction of sebum and sweat production, smoothening of fine lines, slight lifting of the skin, and minimized appearance of pores in the treated area.

  • Hyperpigmentation. An extremely effective skin lightening treatment, mesotherapy can deliver visible results after just one treatment, although a series is usually recommended for best results. It is used to treat acne marks, dark spots, and other signs of pigmentation, including melasma.
  • Fine line, wrinkles, and sagging. Though mesotherapy cannot replace volume loss like fillers do, it is effective in smoothening fine lines and restoring plumpness by stimulating collagen and elastin. Microinjections of hydrating ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, can also improve skin moisture and prevent dryness.

Try: New Cellular Treatment Factor (NCTF) for the face, neck, or under-eyes, P16,500, which uses 54 + 1 active ingredients to improve the signs of aging like fine lines, sagging, and darkness under the eyes.

Try: Anti-Aging Mesotherapy, starts at P5,000 per session, which involves the intradermal injection of hyaluronic acid, Idebenone, taurine, and vitamin C to counteract the signs of skin aging by delivering photoprotective, antioxidant, moisturizing, and firming action. This also protects skin from environmental aggressors as well as other factors, such as stress and smoking.

  • Hair loss. Mesotherapy for hair growth usually involves the injection of natural plant extracts, vitamins, or medications into the scalp to activate the follicles and stimulate regrowth.

Try: Mesohair Treatment for Hair Regrowth, starts at P5,000 per session or P20,000 for 5 sessions (package rate), uses injections of active ingredient cocktails composed of Piridoxine, Copper tripeptide-1, Vit-B Complex (dexpanthenol + biotine) and capsaicin. These ingredients generate a powerful protective effect that stimulates the hair follicle. The treatment also delays hair aging, revitalizes and strengthens strands, and improves microcirculation to allow better delivery of nutrients to the follicle, thus reducing hair loss.

Reminders from the derma

While mesotherapy can deliver impressive results—and at a much faster rate than your topical treatments—it is important to note that the outcome varies from person to person as no skin or scalp is the same. “The ideal candidate for mesotherapy should have realistic needs and expectations, and should be in good health physically and psychologically,” says Dr. Navarro. “It is also crucial that he or she fully understands the procedures and their effects before undergoing treatment.”

As with any dermatological procedure, a complete medical evaluation is done to assess if the patient is fit to undergo the treatment. He adds, “Patients with medical history of uncontrolled diabetes, active skin infections, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and those suffering from severe chronic ailments such as heart dysfunctions and coronary heart diseases are not good candidates for this procedure.” Pregnant women are also not qualified.
