Stretch Mark Treatments That Actually Work, According To A Derma

This way to smoother, firmer skin.

Let’s face it: Stripes are stylish—that is, until they’re on your skin.

Stretch marks, a.k.a. striae, are a common skin complaint particularly among women who’ve gone through pregnancy or weight changes. They initially appear on skin as red, uneven lines, and can turn white or silver over time. And though these so-called “stripes” may never disappear completely, there are ways to minimize their appearance or lighten their color.

Red vs. White Stretch Marks

First, it’s important to distinguish between the two types of stretch marks. Red-tinged ones (or striae rubra) are basically newer stretch marks that appear red because of the blood vessels under the skin. And since they’re fresh, they’re easier to treat.

White stretch marks (or striae alba), on the other hand, are older and less responsive to treatment. This is because the passage of time makes blood vessels narrow, making it hard to stimulate collagen production.

Red stretch marks can be treated with retinoid creams and serums, or products with alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), which promote skin repair. Chemical peels also work as they stimulate cell renewal for skin healing. Meanwhile, regular exfoliation works best for white stretch marks, combined with topical treatments that tone, firm up, and renew skin. For faster results, though, it’s best to talk to a dermatologist about professional treatments such as microdermabrasion, microneedling, and laser therapies.

At-Home Treatments For Smoother Skin

Curious as to how you can minimize the appearance of your current striae and prevent the development of new ones? Here, Dr. Maximin Navarro, Fellow of the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) and co-founder of Bella Pelle Philippines share some of his expert picks, all designed to help address various stretch mark woes.

What it is: This purifying, hydrating exfoliator for the body is essential for sloughing off dead skin cells to renew skin and encourage repair—for a smoother and fresher complexion. For best results, use with the Biologique Recherche Gant De Massage Corps (Body Massage Glove), a silicone glove that can be used on all areas of the body, and which enhances skin’s absorption of active ingredients.

What it is: Both a chemical and mechanical exfoliator, this body scrub contains natural grains and is rich in alpha, poly-alpha, and beta hydroxy acids to stimulate skin cell renewal—all while replenishing and protecting the epidermis with powerful antioxidants.

What it is: Formulated to fade white stretch marks, this firming and exfoliating cream has biomimetic peptides that stimulate the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, and works to tone and refine the skin’s texture.

What it is: This body cream firms up, tones, and helps fight the signs of aging on skin, as well as the aftermath of pregnancy and sudden weight loss. Infused with glycoproteins and natural amino acids, it also helps to improve skin elasticity and restore firmness in areas that are prone to sagging, such as the bust, décolleté, stomach, inner arms, and thighs.

What it is: Here’s a body serum that prevents the sagging and boosts skin elasticity in stretch-mark-prone areas, such as the thighs, inner arms, belly, buttocks, and around the bust. It’s also great in smoothing epidermal irregularities. For best results, use after exfoliating with the Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 Corps.

What it is: The Crème R-Stria body cream works to improve the appearance of existing red stretch marks and prevent the formation of further scarring by decreasing inflammation prior to the formation of white stretch marks, as well as boosting skin repair. Plus: It triggers the production of collagen and elastin fibers for tighter, bouncier skin.

What it is: Love oils? This before and after sun dry body oil contains botanical oils such as sesame seed and coconut oil, which moisturize skin and prevent dehydration. It’s also infused with sunflower seed and apricot kernel oil to nourish the skin, maintain moisture levels, and restore suppleness. The best part? It has a non-greasy formula that can enhance your tan and leave a radiant skin finish.

What it is: This mild lotion is formulated with 12% Gluconolactone and 3% Lactobionic, which are types of polyhdroxy acids (PHAs) that offer benefits similar to AHAs —all while being gentle. It’s also infused with Vitamin E to soothe dry, irritated skin, improve moisture, and deliver anti-aging properties.
