Red vs. White Stretch Marks

First, it’s important to distinguish between the two types of stretch marks. Red-tinged ones (or striae rubra) are basically newer stretch marks that appear red because of the blood vessels under the skin. And since they’re fresh, they’re easier to treat.

White stretch marks (or striae alba), on the other hand, are older and less responsive to treatment. This is because the passage of time makes blood vessels narrow, making it hard to stimulate collagen production.

Red stretch marks can be treated with retinoid creams and serums, or products with alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), which promote skin repair. Meanwhile, regular exfoliation works best for white stretch marks, combined with topical treatments that tone, firm up, and renew skin.
