The Hyperpigmentation Treatment You Should Know About

Here’s everything you need to know about Cosmelan.

When you’re dealing with a blemish left behind by a pimple, dark spots related to sun damage, or seeing brown patches that indicate melasma, there’s a term that dermatologists use to cover them all: hyperpigmentation. Rooted on the word “pigment,” it refers to the darkening or discoloration of the skin due to excess pigment, usually caused by sun exposure, irritation or scarring, and even hormonal changes.

But while our body’s natural repair processes can fade away some discoloration over time, not all signs of hyperpigmentation resolve on their own. As we get older, they become tougher and trickier to treat, too, as mature skin takes longer to heal and regenerate.

This is where brightening products come in—led by formulas powered by vitamin C, kojic acid, hydroquinone, and the likes. Chemical peels and laser treatments are also well-known solutions, especially for those who prefer in-clinic procedures. (Read about best at-home peels for brighter, fresher skin here.) But while these can be effective, results—which take time to achieve—may be short-lived, and recurrence can easily occur. That said, the use of a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen with at least SPF 50 is a must in preventing further pigmentation. Moreover, serious cases require more intensive pigment management and preventative maintenance.

Spotlight on the Cosmelan Treatment

If you haven’t heard of Cosmelan, here’s your intro to the world’s leading professional hyperpigmentation treatment that’s also one of the most popular procedures at Bella Pelle Skin Solutions. A breakthrough method from Mesoestetic, this in-clinic procedure is known for delivering stellar results—both short and long-term—thanks to its unique dual-action mechanism that corrects and regulates pigment.

What does this mean? It doesn’t just work to eliminate or erase visible spots; it also acts on the source of the problem, regulating the overproduction of melanin to prevent its reappearance. Plus, the treatments help manage sebum production, minimize enlarged pores, and stimulate collagen reconstruction.

It’s also safe and is suitable for all types and phototypes (pertaining to reaction to sunlight) of skin.

What it targets:

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (acne marks, blemishes from injury)
  • Pigmented lesions (age spots, sun spots, freckles)
  • Melasma
  • Uneven skin tone

How it works:

The treatment entails a two-phase process.

STEP 1: Professional Treatment
It starts with an in-clinic session, wherein the Cosmelan 1 peel—made for professional use—is applied all over the face. A potent depigmenting formula, it’s infused with an army of skin-renewing and repairing ingredients to stimulate skin peeling and regeneration and promote a healthier complexion. These include kojic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, niacinamide, salicylic acid, tyrosinol complex, rumex canadensis (occidentalis), aloe vera extract, bisabolol, ethoxydiglycol, salicylic acid, and licorice extract.

The application takes just around 10 to 15 minutes, but the peel is left on for around six to 10 hours, depending on the patient’s condition and skin type. The solution is then removed with water.

For the next few days after the treatment (1 to 3 days), skin is expected to look red and flushed, signaling the start of the skin peeling and wound healing. These effects should subside in a week as the skin naturally recovers.

STEP 2: At-Home Treatment
For the second phase, the treatment is continued at home under the guidance of a dermatologist or aesthetic professional using the Mesoestetic Cosmelan Home Pack. This at-home regimen—recommended for use for three months post-treatment—includes three essential products to target hyperpigmented spots and protect from further damage:

  • Cosmelan 2 Cream: This depigmenting cream is indicated for the correction of dark spots and the regulation of melanin production. Safe for all skin types, it can treat various types of pigmentation such as melasma, chloasma, age spots or senile, lentigo, oral contraceptive-induced, or post-inflammatory spots.
  • Melan Recovery: This soothing balm provides immediate relief by reducing the sensitivity in the skin after undergoing the professional treatment as well as the application of Cosmelan 2.
  • Melan 130 Pigment Control: This tinted sunscreen protects the skin from UVA, UVB, IR, and Visible Light (HEV) radiation, shielding against damage that can trigger the recurrence of hyperpigmentation. (It’s a great daily sunscreen, too.)

The results

In just a week or two, dark spots, blemishes, and other signs of discoloration will noticeably be lighter as they start to fade. (Improvement may take longer for cases of melasma.) In about three to four weeks, you can expect to see visibly brighter, more radiant, and even-toned skin.
