5 Skincare Trends You Need To Know This 2022

Spoiler alert: We love ‘em all.

The beauty boom continues this 2022 and it’s going on a pretty surprising route. Endless innovations and new technologies aside, the overarching theme for this year seems to be all about going back to basics—from embracing “skinimalism” to shifting the focus to overall wellness.

Curious? Read on to see what’s happening in the beauty scene right now:

The trend: Skinimalism

Pared down, minimalist beauty routines are still expected to reign supreme as we continue to spend most of our hours at home—and truth be told, our skin’s definitely better for it. “We can give a little more love to our skin by doing less,” says Dr. Maximin Navarro, Bella Pelle’s resident dermatologist and a fellow of the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS). “A simple skin regimen is the trend for 2022.”

That said, multitasking formulas continue to be in high demand, prompting the industry to answer with “condensed beauty,” a movement that sees brands discovering new ways to amplify products’ results and efficiency. Think concentrated formulas with just one to two hero ingredients, and which are designed to reduce product waste.

Just remember the basic skin regimen: “Cleanse, moisturize, and protect,” says Dr. Navarro. “Use a hypoallergenic cleanser suited for your skin type twice a day, followed by a moisturizer that also contains ingredients that target your primary skin concern or problem,” he says. For these, you can try products geared towards restoring and conditioning the skin—specifically those containing prebiotics and probiotics that restore balance on our skin microbiome.

“Last is to protect the skin from damaging effects of UVA/UVB, HEV or visible light, and infrared radiation by wearing a natural sunscreen, a.k.a mineral sunscreens that contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.”

Try: Glowbiotics MD Probiotic Revitalizing Cleanser, P2,150
Ideal for daily use, this probiotic cleanser effectively removes surface impurities, makeup, and oil while hydrating and re-energizing dry mature skin.

Glowbiotics MD Gentle Probiotic Calming Lotion, P3,980
Soothe, soften, and moisturize dry, rough, irritated skin with this nourishing probiotic lotion that also increases skin’s natural production of ceramide.

The trend: Niacinamide

The obsession over this superstar ingredient remains strong and for good reason. Known as a skincare overachiever, niacinamide (a vitamin B3 derivative) can pretty much do anything and everything. Working with the skin’s natural chemistry, it improves texture, brightens the skin tone, boosts moisture retention, regulates sebum production, controls acne and redness, keeps the skin barrier healthy, and protects against sun damage and environmental aggressors—all that while being gentle on the skin.

Try: Mesoestetic Collagen 360 Essence, P4,830
Known primarily as a firming solution, this also contains niacinamide to help restore healthy skin.

Neostrata Illuminating Serum, P3,000
This has 12 active skin brighteners—including our trending ingredient—to target pigment, fade blemishes, and promote a more radiant complexion.

Evenswiss Eventone Serum, P4,200
As its name suggests, this potent serum evens out the skin tone while also improving texture.

The trend: Body Care

Save your precious face products for the neck up because the body category is being spotlighted this year, with special emphasis on body acne treatments. Now that issues like bacne are being talked about more openly—in and out of the derm’s office—the beauty aisles are expected to explode with more acne-fighting formulas for the whole body.

“Acne-prone areas are the chest, back, and the upper arms,” says Dr. Navarro. “Areas of friction and pressure, such as buttocks area, may also develop acne-like eruptions, which are most often folliculitis or inflammation of the hair follicles.”

Try: Aknicare Body Spray (Chest & Back), P2,150
This easy-to-use spray is specifically formulated to control and minimize the symptoms of comedonic and inflamed acne on the chest and back.

Aknicare Cream, P1,500
For acne control without dryness, try this salicylic acid cream that’s also infused with hyaluronic acid to moisturize skin while it fights against breakouts.

Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 Corps
Featuring the cult-fave P50 formula, this stimulates skin’s natural exfoliation and regulates oil production while also hydrating skin.

Biologique Recherche Gommage P50 Corps

The trend: Clean Beauty a.k.a. the Green Trend

Eco-friendly beauty—the kind that respects the earth and our skin—has been a “thing” for a while now, and it’s only expected to become even bigger. “This trend has grown in popularity over the years as consumers have expressed more concern about what goes into their skincare products,” says Dr. Navarro.

These days, it’s normal to see products formulated without harmful components, such as parabens, formaldehyde, preservatives, and even fragrances. Plant-based (or phyto) and organic formulas are filing up the shelves, too, and are becoming more preferred by beauty-loving eco warriors. The best part? Since “green products” primarily use ingredients derived from nature, they’re less irritating on skin, making them ideal for most skin types, including sensitive complexions.

Some “clean” brands to shop at Bella Pelle are Vanicream, Froika, and Kamedis.

The trend: Inside-outside approach

As consumers become more discerning with what they put in their bodies—and on their skin—more and more people are realizing the importance of the inside-outside approach when it comes to skincare. This is where functional medicine comes in. This utilizes a holistic approach when addressing skincare issues and needs, taking into consideration the patient’s physical, mental, and emotional health in order to come up with the best solutions. (Read how a functional wellness doctor can help with your skin health here.) Given this trend’s focus on overall wellness, it’s no surprise that dietary supplements, specifically immunity-boosting minerals and vitamins, are as popular as ever, and are now being used not just to improve health but also to complement skincare routines.

“There is also a focus on gut health as a gateway to overall wellness,” adds Dr. Navarro, explaining that a healthy gut is important in immune, brain, and skin health. “If the gut is unhealthy, this can lead to a ‘leaky gut,’ which can cause widespread inflammation in the body.” This, in turn, can lead to hormonal imbalance, seasonal allergies, eczema of the skin, mood disorders, and autoimmune diseases. To prevent this, it is then crucial to maintain a healthy gut microbiome by eating a balanced diet and adding oral supplements, specifically those that aid in gut health.
