Say Goodbye To Excessive Sweating With Sweatox

Go sweat-free safely with Botox injection for your underarms, hands, and feet.

Unglamorous as it may feel for most, sweating is actually good for you. Our ability to perspire allows us to adapt to environmental changes, helping us cool down naturally and maintain a proper temperature. It’s also our body’s way of filtering and releasing toxins, improving our immune health and even clearing our skin. Case in point: Steam baths and saunas have existed since the ancient times, and have been adapted into today’s world because of their beauty and healing benefits.

Unfortunately for some, sweating can be a real nuisance—that is, if you’re suffering from hyperhidrosis, an abnormally excessive sweating condition that is not necessarily related to heat or exercise. If you perspire too much that it soaks through your clothes or drips through your hands (even when you’re not active or in a hot environment), it’s likely that you have this rare disorder that affects about 2% to 5% of the total population. Aside from disrupting your daily routine and normal activities, it can also be a serious cause of stress, depleting your confidence and straining your relationships.

Understanding hyperhidrosis

Here’s the deal: People with hyperhidrosis have sweat glands that tend to overact even if there’s no apparent reason. Usually, the affected areas are the hands, feet, armpits, and the head. This type, where the sweating is localized, is called focal hyperhidrosis. In such cases, the nerves responsible for communicating with your sweat glands become overactive even without being triggered by heat or physical activity. Scientists have yet to figure out an exact medical cause for this, though it’s been found that it’s hereditary and can run in families. Moreover, symptoms tend to be worse when you’re nervous or have heightened anxiety.

Then there’s secondary hyperhidrosis, a less common type wherein the excessive sweating is due to a medical condition, like diabetes, menopause (hot flashes), thyroid problems, and nervous system disorders. This type is more likely to cause sweating all over the body, and not just in select areas.

How to treat

Frustrated about being a Sweaty Betty? Don’t lose hope; there are treatment options for you. But first, your doctor has to determine if your excessive sweating is indeed caused by a medical condition. If no clear cause can be found, your doctor will then proceed to focus on treating the actual sweating itself.

Non-invasive treatment options include the use of prescription antiperspirants with aluminum chloride, prescription creams with glycopyrrolate (which has a perspiration suppression effect), and nerve-blocking medications. Other more aggressive treatments include microwave therapy, sweat gland removal, and nerve surgery.

If you’re looking for a highly effective but non-surgical treatment that delivers long-lasting results, though, your best bet is Sweatox, a.k.a. Botox for sweating. Why we love it: It’s fast, safe, and can give you months of sweat-free relief.

What is Sweatox?

More popularly known as a cosmetic treatment to smoothen wrinkles, Botulinum toxin injections work to block certain chemical signals from nerves—mostly signals that cause the muscles to contract. In the case of Sweatox, tiny amounts of botulinum toxin are injected to block the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which binds with your sweat glands to signal the release of sweat. Simply put, when you receive Botox injections in areas of the body that commonly sweat, the overactive nerves are essentially paralyzed in order to prevent sweating.

Here are more fast facts about this treatment:

  • Sweatox can be done on the underarms, palms, soles of the feet, and the face.
  • An appointment usually lasts anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes, with the actual injections taking just 20 to 30 minutes (depending on the area being treated). A topical anesthetic is first applied to numb the skin prior to the injection for a less painful and more comfortable procedure.
  • It’s minimally invasive and has no downtime so you can resume regular activities afterward.
  • It’s highly effective—one study showed a 90% decrease in sweating just two weeks after the treatment. Aside from controlling sweating, it also reduces unwanted underarm odor (known as bromhidrosis) when done in the axillary or armpit areas.
  • Results can last from six to nine months.
